Event 9 Recap

$200 + $30 + $20 Bounty NLH Re-Entry (Yellow Chip)

Congratulations to poker pro Jonathan Chehanske (Howell, NJ) who outlasted 285 other bounty hunters to capture the 2011 Borgata Summer Poker Open Event 9 trophy along with $15,481.

Cards were in the air at 11:00 AM and wrapped up around 2 AM, fifteen hours later. The twist everyone loved about this particular tournament was that every player had a $20 bounty on their heads. Knock-em out and take their twenty dollar yellow chip. You could also re-buy as many times as you wanted during the first six levels, and tons of players did.

Veteran players were digging the blind level structures, especially Jonathan, our champion who was glad the final table allowed plenty of room to actually play poker. I might add that the final table of ten stood strong for 2 and ½ hours. Levels 1-10 lasted 30 minutes long, then levels 11 and higher increased to 40 minutes.

Some familiar faces who took a shot at the $55,290 prize money included, Eric Miller, David Heck, Stephanie Hubbard, Vladimir Peck, Bob 'Bullet' Demartino, James 'Suits' Salters, and David Rittmeyer.

Chris Rich (Massapequa, NY) had the best hand of the day with quad 5555’s and was playing with a plastic brace on his left hand to rehab a torn tendon. Rich finished up in 3rd place and banked $5,253.

2nd place honors went to Ketan Patel who knocked out several players before being knocked out by Jonathan Chehanske holding Q-8 offsuit. Patel puts away $9,122 worth of prize money.

Jim Ieronimo had the deepest tournament run of his nascent poker career. Unfortunately it was in 28th place which was the bubble and zero cash money.

A subplot of the tournament followed Henry Guttman (Brooklyn, NY) who after bubbling in Day 2 of the Deepstack, jumped right into Event 9 and needed two miracle rivers just not to bubble again – twice in the same day.

Tammy Lloyd was the Last Woman Standing and finished 9th for $1,105. This knockout Grandmother knocked out 8 players and laid down A-K pre-flop at the final table then lost a set over set hand.

The elite eight included and finished in the following order:

Benjamin Chan 8th, Joe Brand 7th, Todd Richter 6th, Randy Itwaru 5th, Claude Petroy 4th, Chris Rich 3rd, Ketan Patel 2nd, and Jonathan Chehanske 1st.

The top prize of $15,481 is not the largest Borgata cash for Chehanske, a poker pro with many cashes. Jonathan racked up 5 knock-outs and didn’t re-buy. He grinded the entire tournament and incredibly never was all-in with his tournament life on the line.

He's taking the trophy home to Lauren and his family. Congratualtions again!
